BARTOLO SIGNS WITH DEPIRO IN M.B.A
McDonald’s Mackay Meteors guard Sam Bartolo will embark on his first professional playing stint overseas, after signing with Depiro for the 2013-14 Maltese Basketball Association (MBA) season. 23-year old Bartolo holds dual Australian & Maltese citizenship and will compete for Depiro in the countries signature basketball league.
The Mackay native recently finished his sixth season with the McDonald’s Meteors, playing in 15 of the team’s 16 games and showing tremendous improvement in the back end of the 2013 QBL season. Bartolo said he was excited about making the move to Malta and taking the next step in his basketball career. “Playing in Malta has always been an ambition of mine and having dual citizenship makes it a lot easier to get signed,” he said. “It was something that I talked in depth about with my family and my grandfather in particular really encouraged me to give it a go. It will be great to play somewhere outside of Australia and I’m looking forward to experiencing the lifestyle and culture on offer in Malta as well,” he added. “It’s an excellent chance for me to improve and come back to Mackay a better player for next years QBL season.”
Mackay Basketball General Manager Joel Khalu was glad to see the point guard pursue his goal of playing overseas. “Sam is a hardworking young man and I’m very happy that he is getting an opportunity to play professional hoops in Europe,” Khalu said. “He’s the kind of player that coaches love to have on their team. I’m sure he’ll be playing a lot during the MBA season once he adjusts to the style of play and systems involved. Hopefully he can continue to develop and when he finishes his season in Malta, we look forward to getting him back in a Mackay uniform again.”
Bartolo departs Mackay for Malta this Tuesday.
