Basketball – Detur women’s Super Cup: Depiro for the sixth time and their first seasonal honour

Published on 1st March 2011

After a barren last season ,Depiro have now won the Super Cup for the sixth time – always against Hibs – as have also been their three defeats. It was a game to forget for the Paolites who were woeful in their shooting added to the fact that Depiro displayed a stiff defence and contested every inch on the court.

The champions did not capitalise when Kaila Agius commited her third foul and went on the bench. For the second time this season Depiro managed to overturn the score when she was not playing.

The Paolites are still awaiting the return of long term injury Alexis Darmanin. Depiro had Greta Zarb missing once more – still abroad.

The champions suffered the opening basket after missing a number of shots but they made amends when Kirsten Baldacchino made her points as her side led 6-2. Depiro reacted and Agius helped them to obtain an advantage. The latter part of the period had Hibs putting in a three hoop spread when Elena cassar came off the bench and made an instant impact with a couple of hoops.

In the second quarter Depiro twice went to within a point when the scoring slowed down with several missed chances at both ends. Agius went on her third foul but the champions did not take any advantage. It was still a tight match where the Paolites remained pointless for the rest of the period. And Depiro went into a slim halftime lead on a low 19-18 score.

After the break it was Depiro who had Agius back on court who extended their advantage also with a Sarah Pace triple. The champions were back to a basket behind on four occasions with depiro holding on.

A last second hoop for Depiro by Antoinette Borg had Depiro on a 34-30 lead with a session to go. Although Hibs made the first hoop Depiro strode forward to open up a useful lead through personal Borg points including a trey.

The Paolites crept back little by little with the addition of a Baldacchino triple and were just a point in arrears. It was not enough when they missed their last efforts. A Pace free throw closed down the match as Depiro celebrated their first honour in two seasons.

After the game the Detur representative, Sinam Onem, presented the winning trophy to the Depiro captain, Edwina Vella.
