In the interests of the youth categories, the Malta Basketball Association opted to replace the Under-20 league with the Under-19, and newly formed Under 23 leagues.
For the Women’s Under-19 sector the Depiro Basketball Club fielded two teams; the ‘B’ team, consisting mostly of Under-16 players with the aim of providing these youngsters with additional experience and much needed playing time, and the ‘A’ team, of which the majority of were formed by last years Under-16 championship team. In addition to this there was the acquisition of the de Martino sisters, Tina and Steffi.
With such a strong squad at their disposal, the team’s objective to win the championship was made clear from day one of training camp. The girls definitely lived up to the expectations, reaching the semi-final by finishing the regular season on top of the standings and doing so unbeaten with a 10-0 record. Although excited in the initial stages of their semi-final encounter, the girls kept composed and their superiority shone through, as they emerged comfortable winners 50-25. The final was no exception as the coach managed to utilize all the players in the squad, capping off a memorable season with a comfortable 61-42 scoreline and remained unbeaten for the 2011-2012 season.
