Athleta provided adequate opposition to Depiro before finally succumbing with the latter recording their second league victory.

A blistering start for Depiro had them out in front and Athleta’s task was made harder when they had an uphill climb for the rest of the encounter. Furthermore they had to cope with Sam Brincat who was a constant thorn to their defence.

Athleta had Dorien Jager missing once more along with Kelly Busuttil and Giulia Muscat. Depiro included their new American signing Vontisha Woods and recovered Edwina Vella. Missing were Justine Xuereb, Martina Scicluna and Rachel Sammut.

Depiro opened up with a flourish as Brincat nailed a trio of hoops for a solid 13-1 run. Athleta converted a couple of hoops but Depiro came up once more this time with free throws for a better advantage.

Athleta made the better finish to the session and crept closer to their adversaries.

In the second period, Brincat netted a further Depiro triple and Svetlana Micallef came off the bench to make her points.

Athleta battled back and tried to get within the distance but when they were getting closer, Depiro reacted with a heavy 12-2 run to end the period on a strong 39-21 advantage at the interval.

After the break Depiro’s points went done as if the team was taking a breather. Not that Athleta upped their tally so much as they still found it difficult to pierce their opponents’ zone.

It was Athleta at first to crawl nearer with Depiro making just a couple of hoops. Later on in the period it was Steffi De Martino to provide the points for Depiro as they ended 48-31 ahead.

In the last session after a couple of Depiro hoops Athleta began their way back. A 7-0 run with a Lonneke Calleja triple started their march. Brincat netted a further Depiro hoop but Athleta continued with a 7-2 run going under the double figure deficit with Aleksandra Ratomska free throws.

It was left to Brincat to sink her final triple and rest her side’s minds with further points. De Martino applied the finishing touch with her second triple.
