Men’s Division 1: Depiro start league trail on top note

Published on 15th November 2010

Depiro avenged their Shield game defeat by Loyola, to start their league action on a positive note. Loyola found Depiro a hard nut to crack, as they lost all of their sessions of play. Depiro never allowed their adversaries to draw closer, and make life more difficult for them. Three Depiro players had good personal scores, when their side had a wide control of the match.

Loyola’s Clint Cassar was missing, and Depiro fielded a full set of players for the first time this season.

Loyola made a quiet start, and Depiro went on to make a 7-2 run, with points by Roderick Vella and David Bugeja. Loyola’s efforts to draw nearer found Depiro alert enough to hold on to their advantage, and in the latter stages of the session it was Bugeja with a hoop and a triple, to extend his team’s advantage, for the next period. Jovan Mihailovic made hoops, as Loyola tried to inch closer, but midwat through the session it was Depiro with a 10-0 run, and an Andrew Aquilina triple, when they broke clear. They were stopped by a David Camilleri trey, but Depiro had alead to rest on. Anton Axiaq pulled Loyola closer with his brace of hoops, but Depiro made a good reply, with Bugeja’s second triple. At the interval Loyola were still 24-36 in arrears.

Depiro were boosted, after the break, as Aquilina netted two more triples, as a reaction to Loyola’s points. Depiro had gone on to a better lead, before Alex Tabone came up with a personal 7-0 run, to give life to his side. Till the end of the quarter Depiro acquired another better advantage, on a 55-39 score. There was a last period to be played, but the writing was on the wall for Loyola . They suffered a 2-9 run, as Vella sank a triple, and though Billy Zammit replied with another trey, there was quite a difference between the two scores.
